Futuristic lighting design
Surface design and lighting design are two brand-defining elements in the vehicle world of tomorrow. LEONHARD KURZ and MENTOR, the manufacturer of fiber-optic systems, are demonstrating how these two components harmonize perfectly. An all-round successful overall concept for backlit shy tech design surfaces or HMI functions.
Car2X communication with OSRAM
In cooperation with the lighting specialist OSRAM, KURZ is pushing the boundaries of segment-based surface lighting for vehicles. This creates another opportunity for car brands to differentiate themselves with lighting solutions. From the standard lighting functions such as brake and turn signal lights to individual control elements with a Shy Tech effect, functional decorations can be implemented that impress with their aesthetically sophisticated appearance in addition to intuitive operation. This also makes customized shapes and animations such as symbols, words, images, and abstract light patterns possible.
The mini LEDs are applied to a flexible, transparent substrate using functional foil bonding (FFB).
Your advantages at a glance:
- Innovative design thanks to individual dynamic light effects
- Homogeneous surfaces
- Also suitable for 3D geometries and curved surfaces

True-to-color lighting design with MENTOR
Thanks to a tried-and-tested RGB algorithm from MENTOR, the manufacturer of light guide systems, corporate identity colors can be implemented with full color fidelity. Everything from gradient effects with different brightnesses to dynamic exposure of individual symbols or entire color surfaces is possible. Light and surface design merge to create an innovative, futuristic design with fantastic effects and a high degree of customization. Customers benefit from the close cooperation between KURZ and MENTOR in multiple ways. The coordination processes in the project are reduced to a minimum, the production processes are extremely economical and resource-conserving, as are the use of materials.
Your advantages at a glance
- No chromaticity displacement thanks to proven RGB algorithm
- Targeted light control, distribution, and decoupling
- Realization of sophisticated color light motifs
- Faster implementation of designs
- Highly customizable
- High cost-effectiveness

Shy tech design
The innovation and design specialists at KURZ have done a superb job: Explore the Overhead Light Console (OHLC) concept, which projects logos or light designs onto the instrument cluster using projection technology. Additional functions are controlled via touch and gesture. And there’s more to it. Everything is hidden behind sealed surfaces. KURZ ensures that design, functionality, and safety go hand-in-hand for the driver.
Simultaneous sensor integration
The economical IME process creates a highly functional shy tech design in a single step. A one-step process for molding, decoration, and sensor application.
